Today, pupils from Grønnåsen school are stepping into the wildwith the FOOTPRINTs project! Equipped with snowshoes, we’ll explore the forest on Tromsøya, search for animal tracks, and help train an image recognition model developed by our research partners at Artsdatabanken and NTNU.

🐦‍⬛ A few months ago, the Center for European Volunteering @volunteeringcev reached out with a question: can 120 volunteers engage in a hands-on activity and support Rissa’s mission?

Our events usually accommodate no more than a dozen volunteers, but this was a unique opportunity. With so many eager hands, there was one valuable task the volunteers could take on: building nest boxes for the Songbird Project!

Afterwards, we thought of Mark Twain’s quote: “They didn’t know it was impossible, so they did it”.

🇪🇺 We were out for the FOOTPRINTs citizen science project, led by Rissa’s research partner Dr Caitlin Mandeville @ntnu. A collaboration with @artsdatabanken, @trondheimby and @itrollheimen. @tettris is funding the project.

The goal of the project is to use artificial intelligence and citizen science to fill a knowledge gap where wildlife monitoring is most needed, with a focus on Norway’s protected areas.

Sørsjetéen is a jetty on the outskirts of Tromso city center.
🐟 Volunteer-based restoration efforts have turned this artificial reef into a marine life heaven.

🤿🤿 Some of the Kelpers are snorkeling for the first time, others are confirmed free divers, while experienced scuba divers join the events as well. Everyone is welcome to join these free events.

✊ @rissa_citizen_science is leading the restoration programme along Sørsjetéen, but it is really a community project, where success depends on public participation.

🦦We will keep snorkeling along Sørsjetéen to maintain the conditions that are favorable to marine life, and document the changes.
🦦 We are also starting restoring a new site, at Telegrafbukta, on the southern tip of Tromsøya.

No, kittiwake hotels do not attract kittiwakes to Tromsø. Kittiwakes are coming anyways. Kittiwakes hotels are used to lure the kittiwakes that were breeding on buildings, after these buildings have been covered with anti-kittiwake deterrents.

When no alternative breeding sites are provided, the displaced kittiwakes colonize neighboring buildings.

This hotel is financed by @tromsfylke as a way to protect the building and avoid spreading conflict in Tromsø sentrum. The black-legged kittiwake is a Highly Endangered species on Norway’s Red List.

Thanks to the TROMSØ KELPERS, and after only two restoration events, Sørsjeteen is declared kelp friendly again 🎉🎉

Sea urchins had returned massively to the site during the winter, but their density was nothing in comparison to what it was before the restoration effort started in 2023 (over 200 urchins per square meter!).

🐟 The next restoration event will take place on the 8th of March.

This owl survey includes over 500 nestboxes in Troms county. The first nestbox was put up in 1978!

In Norway, forests are logged before they can get old. As a result, old trees with cavities are extremely rare.

These nestboxes compensate for the lack of natural cavities, and they help study the movements and conservation status of owls (Tengmalm, pigmy and hawk owls).

Let’s get rid of the spikes.

Building owners spend a lot of money to install these spikes. But they are ineffective, they injure and kill kittiwakes, and bring negative publicity to the building owners.

By removing spikes, we will save a few kittiwake lives next summer.
When a species is in high danger of extinction, every individual matters.

We will meet at Søndre Tollbodgate 3 at 16:30 and map the spikes that are a threat to kittiwakes. One hour max!
